The proliferation of plastic products and the difficulties of collecting them after use pose problems of unsanitary conditions, degradation of the living environment, the marine environment and health (decimation of livestock and aquatic fauna, production of dioxins and furans with burning of waste, waterproofing of soils, obstruction of water evacuation channels, etc.).
It is in the context of the fight against the plastic threat that Senegal benefited funding from the United States Department through the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), to implement a project entitled: “capacity development to catalyze actions and commitments at national and global levels to reduce plastic pollution, including in the marine environment”. This project aims to help countries undertake capacity building activities to combat plastic pollution, including in the marine environment, through the development of strategic planning tools.
It is in this context that the DEEC organized an information and sharing workshop on the capacity building project to reduce plastic pollution, including in the marine environment. The workshop took place on November 8, 2023 in the premises of the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development (MEDD).
All relevant stakeholders including PAN Africa took part in this important meeting which constitutes a preview before INC3 (Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee on Plastics).
At the end of the meeting, participants are informed of the objectives and expected results of the project and have a better understanding, strategic directions for better coordination and synergy of interventions are defined, good practices in reducing plastic pollution are shared.
