Feeding the world without poisoning it, healthy agriculture for healthy food

Project to build the capacity of farmers in the Middle Valley of the Senegal River Delta to adopt alternatives to the use of pesticides.

Project to build the capacity of farmers in the Middle Valley of the Senegal River Delta to adopt alternatives to the use of pesticides.

In the Middle Valley of the Senegal River Delta, problems related to the use, storage, and handling of pesticides manifest as human poisoning and environmental pollution (soil, water, etc.). Regarding human health, a 2019 study by PAN Africa on the conditions of use and health impacts of pesticides in the Niayes region and the Senegal River Delta revealed cases of poisoning. Environmentally, pesticide use in fields contributes to environmental degradation and harms biodiversity. Training and awareness-raising activities related to pesticide handling and knowledge are insufficient, meaning that farmers are not yet able to implement integrated pest management and prevention techniques. The objective of this project is to strengthen the capacities of producers and producer groups in the villages of Donaye, Guia4, and Wourou Madiou, as well as in ten (10) other sites in the Middle Valley, through demonstration plots, using agroecological methods, and to contribute to better pesticide management. The expected results are a reduction in pesticide use, improved producer yields, and the preservation of their environment.
