Dakar, April 21, 2026 — The Senegal Agroecology Days officially opened this Tuesday at the Museum of Civilizations in Dakar, bringing together nearly 400 participants for what promises to be a landmark moment in the country's agricultural transition.

Held under the theme "From Vision to Action: Institutionalizing Agroecology for Sustainable Food Systems," the event signals a decisive shift in how Senegal intends to approach food production, environmental stewardship, and rural development in the years ahead.

The opening ceremony was co-presided over by the Minister of Agriculture and the Minister of the Environment, whose joint presence at the helm of proceedings sent a strong and deliberate message: agroecology is no longer a peripheral conversation — it is a national priority that cuts across ministries and sectors.

The first day drew close to 400 participants, including farmers, researchers, civil society representatives, development partners, and policymakers. The diversity of those in attendance reflected the cross-cutting nature of agroecology itself — a discipline that sits at the intersection of food security, climate resilience, biodiversity, and social equity.

The choice of the Museum of Civilizations as the venue was itself symbolic, evoking the deep historical relationship between Senegalese communities and the land they have cultivated for generations — and the urgency of protecting that relationship for future generations.

The central theme of this year's edition captures the mood of the moment with precision. Across Africa and beyond, agroecology has gained significant traction in academic and civil society circles. The challenge now is translating that momentum into concrete institutional frameworks, legal instruments, and public investment.

Senegal appears ready to take that step. Participants heard calls for agroecology to be embedded into national agricultural policy, school curricula, extension services, and public procurement — moving the approach from the experimental margins into the mainstream of the food system.

The Senegal Agroecology Days are set to continue over the coming days, with workshops, panel discussions, field testimonies, and working sessions expected to produce concrete recommendations for policymakers. The event represents a unique opportunity for all stakeholders — from smallholder farmers to government officials — to align around a shared vision for Senegal's agricultural future.

As the opening day demonstrated, the energy and the will are present. The work now is to turn them into lasting institutions, binding commitments, and transformative action on the ground.
